National 5 Results Day: What Happens Next?
Updated: Jul 26
National 5 Results Day is one of the biggest days of the year for thousands of families across Scotland. For some, it will be a day of celebration. For others, it may bring uncertainty about what happens next.
Some students will open their results and be delighted. Others may feel disappointed or unsure about what comes next.
Whatever the outcome, it's important to remember one thing:
One set of exam results does not define a young person's future.
When I was at school, I didn't achieve the Standard Grade results I had hoped for. At the time, it felt like a huge setback.
Looking back, I realise those results were only one part of my journey.
I went on to complete engineering apprenticeships, serve in the Royal Navy, build a career in engineering and eventually graduate with a First-Class Honours Degree in Electronic Engineering.
That's one of the reasons I started Burnett Maths & Physics Tuition.
I know first-hand that success isn't always a straight line, and I want every student I work with to understand that one disappointing result doesn't determine what they're capable of achieving.
So, what happens after Results Day?
If your child achieves the grades they were hoping for, it's time to celebrate their hard work and help them prepare for the next stage of their education.
If the results aren't quite what they expected, don't panic.
Every school is different, but there are often several options available. Some students move on to Higher, some repeat National 5 to strengthen their understanding, and others follow a different pathway that's better suited to them. The most important thing is to speak to your child's school after Results Day and understand which options are available to them.
One set of results doesn't mean the door has closed.
One student I worked with had to repeat National 5 Maths because they needed it for university. Together we rebuilt their confidence, they achieved the pass they needed, went on to complete Higher Maths and were able to continue towards their goal of going to university.
Everyone's journey is different.
September is a fresh start
Whether your child is moving on to Higher or repeating National 5, September is a chance to start again with a clear plan.
The first few weeks of the new school year are the perfect time to build confidence, strengthen any weaker areas and develop good study habits before the workload increases.
Starting early is often much easier than trying to catch up later in the year.
My advice to parents
Celebrate your child's effort, whatever their results.
Listen before trying to solve the problem.
Help them focus on what comes next rather than dwelling on what has already happened.
Most importantly, remind them that exam results are only one part of their story.
I've seen students grow in confidence, overcome setbacks and achieve things they never thought possible.
Sometimes, all they need is someone who believes in them and explains things in a way that finally makes sense.
